A new type of medium-low-speed magnetic levitation train (maglev train) rolled off the production line on June 13 at the factory of CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co Ltd., in Zhuzhou City, Hunan Province.

The home-made maglev train, with a top speed of 160 kilometers per hour, is the first of its kind in China.

Compared with the first-generation 100-kilometer-per-hour maglev trains, its traction efficiency is improved by 30 percent, said Tong Laisheng, head of the maglev research institute at the company.

It can carry up to 500 passengers with three carriages, Tong noted.

China's first maglev railway line, which was put into operation in Changsha in May 2016, has so far covered more than 1.7 million kilometers and transported an accumulative number of nearly six million passengers.

The new train is suitable for trips between urban areas and satellite towns, while the old one for urban transport.

The company is also engaged in the development of medium-speed maglev trains with a design speed of 200 kilometers per hour.
