China's e-commerce giant JD.com Inc. will invest a total of 2 billion yuan (US$312.5 million) to build the headquarters of its unmanned delivery vehicle program in Changsha Economic and Technological Development Zone in the next three years, as an agreement was signed between the company and the development zone's management committee on June 12.

The project is part of an investment plan worth 10 billion yuan (US$1.56 billion) the company inked in December 2017 on development of an automated delivery vehicle and intelligent manufacturing industrial base.

The project will be engaged in research and development of logistics robots, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and unmanned vehicles, said Xiao Jun, JD's vice president.

The project will be implemented in two phases: In the first phase, JD will develop a research institute and a development center to realize such functions as R&D, testing, personnel training and data center management; in the second phase, it will develop an intelligent manufacturing industrial base for production of intelligent robots, equipment and delivery vehicles.

It aims to attract to Changsha no less than 1,000 talented personnel with a bachelor's degree or above and more than ten expert teams within the next five years.
