Hunan's Ziquejie Terraced Fields have been designated as a Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) site by the Food and Agricultural Organization (FAO) of the United Nations, Hunan Daily reports.

The GIAHS status was confirmed in a letter recently sent by the FAO to the Ministry of Agriculture of China.

Ziquejie Terraced Fields, Guangxi Longsheng Longji Terraces, Jiangxi Chongyi Hakka Terraces and Fujian Youxi Lianhe Terraces are important parts of rice terraces systems in subtropical China.

Located in Shuiche Town of Xinhua County, Loudi City, Ziquejie Terraced Fields cover an area of more than 5,360 hectares. The terraced fields, with a history of more than 2,000 years, are one of the most spectacular terraced fields in China.

The irrigation project was included into the World List of Heritage Irrigation Structures in 2014 by the International Commission on Irrigation and Drainage (ICID).
