​Celebrating Spring Festival in Hunan

Hunan has its own traditions for celebrating the Spring Festival. Temple fairs, skiing, praying for good luck for the new year and exhibitions…explore the traditional customs, unique beauty and irresistible glamour of the fascinating destination.

Eat, pray and have fun here as the province ushers in the Chinese Lunar New Year!

Nanyue Temple Fair

Nanyue Temple Fair, which was launched on Jan. 18 at the Grand Temple of Mount Heng in Nanyue District of Hengyang City, is a large-scale traditional social gathering which dates back to the second year of the reign of Emperor Wuzong during the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907). 

There will be a series of activities, including lion dances, the First China (Nanyue) Tourism Products Creative Design Competition, a lantern painting competition, guessing lantern riddles, intangible cultural heritage shows, lantern festival, gourmet food fairs, praying for health, good luck and longevity, and the First China (Nanyue) Dragon and Lion Dance Championship. 

Mount Heng is known as one of China's five most famous mountains.

Getting a taste of life in ancient times at Taohuayuan, Changde

During this year's Spring Festival, visitors to the Taohuayuan Scenic Area, or Peach Blossom Land, in Changde City will get a taste of the fascinating idyllic life in ancient time as they will be entertained with a variety of special activities, including lion and dragon dances, land boat dances, real landscape shows reproducing the tranquil and happy life of the ancient people in the paradise depicted by famous poet Tao Yuanming (AD 365-427), and the Nuo Opera, a popular Chinese folk opera with a long history which originated from a religious ritual to ward off devils and evil spirits.

Celebrations in Hongjiang Ancient Commercial Town

Situated in Hongjiang District of Huaihua City, Hongjiang Ancient Commercial Town is dubbed "China's No. 1 ancient commercial town." 

The ancient town boasts nearly 400 well-preserved ancient architectural complexes which were built during the Ming and Qing Dynasties (1368-1911).  

Various activities, including special lion and dragon dances reviving the prosperous scenes of the town in ancient times, ancient stage shows, hundred-family banquet and worshiping the God of Wealth, will offer a grand feast to tourists. 

Do not miss the great opportunities to savor the unique local delicacies and snack, such as stewed duck with glutinous rice cake flavored by duck blood, sour turnip and rice curd.

Spring Festival Temple Fair at Xiongshan Ancient Temple

Xiongshan Ancient Temple, located in the Daxiong Mountain National Forest Park in Xinhua County of Loudi City, will embrace its first Spring Festival temple fair this year.

Cultural and folk performances to debut during the temple fair include famous Meishan martial art shows, dragon and lion dances, and intangible cultural heritage shows.

There will also be sunning acrobatics, magic shows and traditional tea art performances.

Visitors should also not miss the mouth-watering local food and snack, including fried glutinous rice cakes, Xinhua desserts, Baixi bean curd and preserved pork from Shuiche Town. The "three-in-one soup" with the food materials of beef, tripe and ox blood is a must-try.

Daxiong Mountain is said to be hometown of Chi You, one of the legendary tribal chiefs who lived around 5,000 years ago. Chi You, Yellow Emperor and Yan Emperor are seen as important ancestors of Chinese people.
