Hunan wins 17 national science awards

17 projects, which were undertaken by Hunan Province or fulfilled with its participation, won the national awards for science and technology in 2017.


The National Science and Technology Awards Conference was held in Beijing, capital of China, on Jan. 8 to confer the State Science and Technology Awards in five categories: State Pre-eminent Science and Technology Award, State Natural Sciences Award, State Technology Invention Award, State Science and Technology Progress Award and International Science and Technology Cooperation Award.


Hunan received 11 prizes of the State Science and Technology Progress Award and one prize of the State Natural Sciences Award.


The innovation team led by China's father of hybrid rice Yuan Longping won the first prize of the State Science and Technology Progress Award for its great innovation in and outstanding contributions to rice cultivation. The Hunan Hybrid Rice Research Center serves as the project leader.


"The strategies of diagnosis and treatment of lupus erythematosus and the innovation and application of relevant key techniques," a project carried out mainly by Lu Qianjin, a professor from the Second Xiangya Hospital of Central South University, took the second prize of the State Science and Technology Progress Award.


A total of 271 projects and nine scientists received the national prizes.


Explosives expert Wang Zeshan and virologist Hou Yunde were honored with the State Pre-eminent Science and Technology Award, the top science award.
