Zhuzhou's smart bus, or Autonomous Rail Rapid Transit (ART) system, will start operation in February during the upcoming Chinese Spring Festival holiday, according to the Office of the Leading Group on Construction of Public Transport Projects, local media reports.

Citizens can take a free ride with their identity cards, said the office.

The first phase of the world's first electric smart bus, which runs on virtual tracks, is undergoing line matching test.

The smart bus, produced by CRRC Zhuzhou Locomotive Co., Ltd., was unveiled in last October.

The manufacturing base for the smart bus in Jinma Xingu Industrial Park will begin mass production soon, with planned monthly output of eight buses.

Three self-driving vehicles will run on the three-kilometer-long route between Shen Nong Grand Theater and Zhuzhou Sports Center.

The second phase of the ART system will kick off construction this year. With a total length of nine kilometers, it will be completed within two years.

It is expected that the ART system will be connected to traditional buses and bus rapid transit (BRT) system in the future to improve the city's public transport capacity.
