The city of Zhangjiajie in Hunan Province was honored with the title of "National Forest City" together with 18 other cities across China, according to the 2017 Forest City Construction Conference held in Chengde City, Hebei Province, on October 10.

The Municipal Government of Zhangjiajie invested 539 million yuan on forest planting in the past three years, also with an investment of 280 million yuan from enterprises and all sectors of society, according to Liu Gean, acting mayor of the city during the conference. The green coverage ratio in Zhangjiajie has reached 41.84 percent and the green park space per capita 11.54 square meters, he added.

It is reported that the appraisal of "National Forest City" has been conducted annually since it was launched in 2004. The honored city will receive reexamination three years later by the State Forestry Bureau and if it's unqualified, the honor will be withdrawn.
