The Hunan Week will highlight Hunan Province's accomplishment in economic and social development and its unique cultural charm, so as to promote friendly exchanges and co-operation between this big province in central China and different places in the world, according to Li Pei, deputy director of the Committee on Hunan Province's Participation in Expo Milano and chairman of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade Hunan Sub-Council.

During the Hunan Week, typical Hunan elements, including hybrid rice, chrysanthemum stone carvings, Hunan porcelain, Hunan Embroidery, Hunan Tea, Hunan liquor, Hunan Cuisine and Hunan fireworks, will shine on this international stage.

Organizers of the Hunan Week will send Zongzi (a traditional Chinese food made of glutinous rice) and silk handicrafts as gifts to pavilions of other countries and international organizations on June 20, as this year's Dragon Boat Festival, a traditional Chinese festival, falls on that day. The festival, which commemorates the death of Qu Yuan, a patriot poet during the Warring States Period (475-221 BC), originated in Hunan.

Five cities from Hunan, including Changsha, Yueyang, Zhangjiajie, Shaoyang and Chenzhou, will showcase their local elements during this period.

Music concerts, biz matching activities and tourism promotions will also be held to promote the province's cooperation with the outside world.

"The Hunan Week will fully display Hunan's advanced agricultural technology, great economic strengths and unique cultural charm," Li said.

Hunan is one of the eight Chinese provincial regions selected to showcase their agricultural strengths and cultural charm at the expo. With its profound agricultural civilization and well-developed modern agriculture, the fertile land of fish and rice finely embodies the theme of the expo – "Feeding the Planet, Energy for Life."
