Xiangtan City, an ancient city with a history of more than 1,500 years, is the hometown of Mao Zedong, the great leader of the Chinese people, and Qi Baishi, a world-famous master of Chinese painting.

Xiangtan is one of the major industrial cities in Hunan with a number of large and midsize industrial enterprises, including the Xiangtan Iron and Steel Company, the Shaofeng Cement Group and the Xiangtan Electric Motor Company.

In 2014, the city’s GDP reached 157.1 billion yuan, up 10.7 percent over 2013, and the local financial sector’s revenue totaled 15.9 billion yuan, up 10.1 percent.

There are more than 80 tourist attractions in the vicinity of Xiangtan. The city of Shaoshan is well-known in China as the hometown of Chairman Mao Zedong; he was born there and started revolutionary activities there in his youth. It has also become a well-known scenic area and a sacred place to commemorate the Chinese Revolution because of its beautiful natural environment and revolutionary history.

The appearance of the city is changing every year. Its improved infrastructure network – consisting of well-paved roads, convenient transport, sufficient water, power and gas supplies, environmental protection policies and extensive green space – provides good conditions for investment. Xiangtan also has many parks and street gardens.
