Shaoyang

Shaoyang, the gateway of southwest Hunan Province, consists of eight counties – Xinshao, Shaodong, Shaoyang, Longhui, Dongkou, Xinning, Suining and Chengbu Miao Autonomous County – the county-level city of Wugang City, and the three urban districts of Shuangqing, Daxiang and Beita. The city has the highest population and the third-largest land among all the cities in Hunan.

The climate of Shaoyang is humid, and it has four distinct seasons. Temperatures are generally mild without a severe winter or a sweltering summer. The annual average temperature ranges from 16.1 C to 17.1 C, and annual rainfall averages 1,200 to 1,500 millimeters.

Shaoyang abounds in natural resources. Its rich deposits of nonferrous metals and nonmetals are known throughout Hunan Province. It has proven reserves of 74 kinds of minerals, including coal, iron, tungsten, tin, antimony, manganese, gold, marble, gypsum and several rare earth metals.

There is lots of picturesque scenery all over Shaoyang. Mount Nanshan is known for its vast green hills, grasslands and clear waters, while Mount Langshan has a wide variety of stones and peaks in strange shapes and different sizes. Mount Yunshan attracts visitors for its mysterious fairyland-like landscapes, and Huangsang's well-preserved primeval forest, with its abundance of rare birds and animals being, is well worth a visit.

Shaoyang has a complete industrial system that spans machinery, textile, chemical, medical, building material, papermaking and food processing industries. In recent years, the city's transportation, telecommunications, energy resources and infrastructure have all been further strengthened.

In 2014, its GDP topped 126.2 billion yuan, up 10.8 percent over 2013.
