China to promote urbanization along Yangtze River
- CNTV, April 22, 2015
The Chinese government has announced a plan to develop conurbations, or 'city clusters', along the middle reaches of the Yangtze River. It comes as the country moves to create a new economic growth engine and turn its heartland into a major economic belt.
China's State Council says 317,000 square kilometers along the river will be designated as new urban areas, hosting transportation and energy projects. The planned development will span across three provinces -- Hubei, Hunan and Jiangxi.
The Yangtze River runs from China's western highlands and empties into the East China Sea close to Shanghai. The areas along the river remain relatively under-developed, compared to China's more prosperous coastal regions.
